New Program at Roosevelt High School Stokes Students On Engineering
There is a devoted group of educators working weekends to bring essential programs to our public schools. At Roosevelt High School, students are gaining the foundation and critical skills to confidently explore careers in STEM fields.
Spring semester, Randy Scott, Ansell Abrams and James Duckworth brought students from engineering, computer science and construction classes together to build a pinball machine from the ground up.
The project created the perfect opportunity to make a promotional video for the Engineering Program, initiated by Jennie Cha with GEAR UP. We wanted capture the trial and error method of engineering, reflect what the students were learning and also collaborate with them in the making of a video for their peers.
The students were instrumental in shaping the content, creating assets on the laser printer for the stop-motion elements and opening up about their hopes, dreams and action plans for careers in engineering.
GEAR UP is a program within RHS that provides college mentors, college readiness and builds relationships between students, teachers and Portland universities.
This video intends to intrigue incoming and current students to the handful of engineering classes offered. The program features University partnerships, college mentors and college credit to blaze a path for their community's future engineers.
